Robert E. Simon was the founder of Reston

Reston, VA, is a planned community located in western Fairfax County, Virginia. It is 20 miles west of Washington, DC. The town has a population of more than 58,000.

Simon had a vision of creating a unique suburban community. His plan called for mixed-use development with clusters of high-rise apartment buildings. He also wanted to provide an attractive, affordable community where people could live and work. In addition, he wanted to create a welcoming environment that encouraged racial and economic diversity.

Simon’s dream for Reston evolved into a reality in 1964. He began acquiring land in western Fairfax County, VA. Initially, the county opposed his plan. However, he eventually secured approval for the master plan.

Despite his success, Simon faced many challenges. Gulf Oil, one of his partners, decided to take over the development of Reston. This caused Simon to lose control of his project. Eventually, he was forced out of the company.

Nonetheless, he remained active in the community after his death. In 2004, he helped celebrate Reston’s 40th anniversary. In addition, he was honored as an honorary co-chair of the Best of Reston Gala.

The community has a metro station

If you are looking for an alternative to your private vehicle, you should consider taking the shuttle to Reston’s newest Metro station. The shuttle is privately financed through a cost-sharing agreement. It is a multi-modal option and will provide access to six new Metro stations.

Reston’s Metro Station is a part of Fairfax County Government. This area is in the middle of an urban revitalization effort. In order to support this effort, a plaza has been built connecting new buildings to the metro stop.

Reston Town Center is a mixed-use development with a number of corporate headquarters and restaurants. Some of the companies with a presence in the area include Microsoft, SolarWinds, Meta Platforms, Inc., and Amazon Web Services.

Reston’s new Silver Line Metrorail project was completed in 2014. Now, the next phase of the project will add six more stations. These new stations will link to the Dulles Airport and Loudoun County.

Transit-oriented development is expected to be the most dense near the Silver Line. New office and retail space will be added as well as apartments.

It’s a backyard wildlife habitat community

The Reston, VA area was named the best place to live in Virginia in 2018. Located in Fairfax County, the town is known for its historic parks. There are also several nationally recognized shops and restaurants within its town center.

One of the best aspects of living in Reston is its commitment to protecting trees. As of this writing, there are over 700 acres of forest in the region. In addition, there are several lakes and streams for swimming and boating.

Despite its relatively small size, Reston is also home to the National Wildlife Federation, a nonprofit that partners with communities in 50 states and territories. The organization offers a number of products and services to encourage conservation and wildlife appreciation.

The Backyard Wildlife Habitat program has been around since the 1970s. However, only a few municipalities have jumped on the bandwagon. Despite its obscurity, this program can be a boon to homeowners and local wildlife.

According to the NFWF, the most effective way to encourage habitat enhancement is by implementing a community-wide certification process. To earn such a distinction, individual properties such as schools, churches and HOAs can achieve up to five points.

It’s a great place for retired people

If you’re looking for a place to retire in the US, you should consider Reston, Virginia. It’s been ranked as the best place to retire in the country.

The city is located in Fairfax County, which is only about twenty miles from the nation’s capital. This area offers plenty of activities for retirees. You’ll find historic sights, museums, parks, and easy access to medical care.

There are several national parks to explore in Fairfax County. For example, you’ll find Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge, which is home to the first bald eagle sanctuary in the United States. You’ll also have access to hundreds of miles of hiking trails.

The Reston Nature Center features a naturalist on-site, as well as a picnic area and a campfire area. Additionally, there are exhibits and children’s programs to enjoy.
